I noticed I was still getting comments on What Potter Wants, so I googled to see if it had been recced somewhere (I had a fic recced on a facebook page once, and I got comments for aaaaaaaages).

Anyway, I found this:

Insane commercial webpage, with my fic on it, with lots of words changed ???!!

Everything else on there looks like boring articles trying to sell you dodgy supplements and whatnot, and then... MY FIC. All mangled to fuck O_o

It seems to have gone through a weird translation process where odd words have been substituted with synonyms. And then, other words have just been substituted with something totally random. IT'S BRILLIANT. It's so much funnier now. In fact, I think I might ask them to do this to ALL my fics :DDD

Here is a sample, to whet your appetite:

Malfoy's handiwork was moving under his robes )

ETA: OMG they have PLENTY of fanfic on there:
http://www.magicpillsonline.com/?s=harry+potter&search=Search
I haven't found any flisters stories on there yet, but I'm still looking....

ETA AGAIN: WE HAVE PODFIC, I REPEAT, WE HAVE PODFIC! The amazing [livejournal.com profile] queenie_mab has recorded the garble-ised fic and posted it here on AO3. I cried laughing. CRIED.
birdsofshore: (curlew)
I wrote something. *points at it*

Also, while I am here, thank you to people who have enquired if I was still alive. I really am! Just busy writing things I should have handed in a week ago. I am going to get back to them now, but I'll also try to read the other BJF fics that I see popping up. I hope to have much more time to hang out on LJ again soon. Sorry if I owe you a reply or a comment or something. <3

Title: What Potter Wants
Author: [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Word count: ~3500
Rating: I sort of wish I had written a PG-rated blow job, but I didn't. NC-17
Warnings: PWP
Summary: Harry definitely didn't want to do that to Malfoy. Not at all. So why did Malfoy keep saying that he did?
Author's Notes: Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] torino10154 for hosting Blow Job Friday. Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] icmezzo for the lovely beta. Any remaining errors are all my own work.

Dear [livejournal.com profile] naadi,

I'm sorry this is so little, and a day late, to boot, but I just wanted to make you a little thank you for all the lovely work you do in running the art fest, and for your own gorgeous creations which give me and many others so much pleasure.

"The stories we love best do live in us forever" is one of my favourite quotes from JKR about the series, and to me it definitely applies to the stories that we fan writers and artists make, too. I know the stories that your art tells will stay with us. ♥

If you'd like to let me have an address I can send it to, that would be lovely!

I hope you had a wonderful day yesterday and are enjoying what's left of the weekend.

♥ ♥ ♥

But first....

~~ Further to the discussions about concrit etc etc (don't worry, I have absolutely zero desire to stir it all up again) I need to tell you I made some changes to my rec post for [livejournal.com profile] megyal's gorgeous fic Truffles, Noble Lord of the Sky, and added an email that megyal sent me and asked to have included. It's here: http://birdsofshore.livejournal.com/49092.html

~~ Furthermore, [livejournal.com profile] megyal, who is spoiling us this month, has written a gem of a story for my choice of trope: "forced bed sharing." O, forced bedsharing, how do I love thee? This fic is full of her usual poetry and magic, and at under 2k, it's a delicious treat. I read it twice and some of the lines made me stop and read them again and again because they are just so rich and fine.

when we're done sleeping (we'll stay busy dreaming)

birdsofshore: (curlew)
Sometimes a line gets stuck in my head. It's not usually anything deep or meaningful, although occasionally it might be. At the moment, some of my best ones are:

"He's sarcastic, and haughty, and REFUSES to wear a shirt." from [livejournal.com profile] dustmouth's Keep Your Shirt On

"The Saviour of the bloody wizarding world does not. Wear. Pants." from [livejournal.com profile] dysonrules Wayward Owls and Pub Hunts.

Ok, there's a bit of a theme going on there...

Here's a corker from one of my FAVOURITE FICS which everyone should read, but hardly anyone ever does. It just makes me cackle.

"Greg," repeated Draco. "Big man, quiet—"

"Former minion," added Harry, which earned him an elbow in the ribs.

from [livejournal.com profile] omi_ohmy's The Redemption of Gregory Goyle.

Here's a beautiful one:

his flaws were the salt that brought out the flavour from [livejournal.com profile] who_la_hoop's The Rabbit and the God

Then the last one, which is not quite right, as I've forgotten where it's from, but it was a dialogue between Draco and Pansy, and went something like.

"Then I saw Weasley."

"Which one?"

"Our King."

Ahahahaha. Point me to that one if you know it, please. from Pursuing Potter by [livejournal.com profile] hereticalvision

Do lines from fics take up residence in your head? Which are your favourites, at the moment? Just short, but perfect, or funny, things that have stayed with you.
birdsofshore: (curlew)
I'm editing this rec because of discussions I have had with megyal, and my own feelings about what I initially wrote. At megyal's request, I'm not deleting anything, and I'll add the changes in italics so just for the record, anyone can see what I originally said and what is new.

I decided to make the rec in this form because of various discussions on my flist lately about being more honest in recs and comments, discussing the good and the bad, etc. I have reservations about this, but have read some convincing arguments for it, along with some that worry me. I thought in the interests of being open minded, I would try a rec which stated some negatives as well as positives, and see how I felt about it. The answer was, I felt uncomfortable about it, and decided this style is not for me. I took the post down and emailed megyal to apologise. Megyal, meanwhile, once she had worked out what I was on about :DD sent me the following email, asking that I put the rec back up, add some more information to it, and also post her email in full as a "punishment" for my sins :DDD. I am more than happy to do all these things.

This mess turned out sort of OK, due in large part to megyal's wonderfulness, but I have no more plans for further recs in this style.
I think the arguments about full disclosure recs have hurt a lot of people, so I'm hoping they won't continue on this post. If anyone wants to take issue with anything I've said here, could I ask politely that it's done by PM, to avoid further upset to people who are feeling sensitive about it? Thank you!

Here's megyal's lovely email to me:

I was really confused when I got this message because I had no idea what you were talking about. I sat in the armchair for a few minutes, trying to remember if I'd seen any post like that, until I read that you'd deleted the post.

It made me really curious as to what you'd written, so I found a cached version of your post. I'm sorry?

I'm not mad or offended over the full disclosure bit; I mean, 99& of that post was of the most complimentary nature, and you shared your opinion in a very kind way. I read the post about four times and all I'm a little sad about is that you didn't give me a chance to learn what you thought didn't make sense; I would have liked to know, so I could explain what I probably meant...and that way, I could learn too. I could learn not to do something that would cause confusion.

Any beta of mine can tell you that I have a bunch of ideas floating in my mind and sometimes it gets lost in translation; when they point out, "Marie, this isn't connecting here," I say, "OH YEAH in my head-movie it's LIKE THIS." As a writer yourself, you know that. Switch it around: if I posted that there were a few things that didn't add up in your fic and you didn't get a chance to explain to me, or really understand what I meant before I deleted the post, I'd think you'd be a little pouty too.

Full disclosure for me: I'm fond of loose ends, but if it happens enough to annoy readers, then I'll need to know to curtail that habit.

I'd like if you put back the post and point what loose ends bugged you (probably behind a cut if it's spoilery? haha spoilery for one my MY fics, that's funny). L, you know the ego of a writer, particularly one in fanfiction. It's fragile but, you know, kinda needs to be steel-plated so we're not assholes at each other and ourselves all the time. And I'm not done learning about writing yet.

For your punishment, if you're going to put up back the post, you also need to post my entire reply to your apology, which, by the way, is wholeheartedly (and a little confusedly) accepted.

And here is my rec with added spoilery detail under a cut:

Author/Artist
: [livejournal.com profile] megyal
Title: Truffles, Noble Lord of the Sky
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Summary: Harry is friends with a winged snake that disappears every day at sundown.
Rating: PG
Word Count: 10,600

OK, I'm going to try one of these complete disclosure recs and hope it doesn't all go wrong. If you are reading, [livejournal.com profile] megyal, don't panic, I adored your fic!

This is such a lovely story; I woke up early and decided to finish it off this morning, and it put a big smile on my face before the day had even begun.

The fic deals with Harry's relationship with a winged snake, Truffles, who appears during the day and seems to have assumed a guardian's role amongst the young post-war Slytherins. It's told in a non-linear way and from different viewpoints, including Truffles' itself. This is particularly charming, especially the parts which describe its view of Harry, and the syntax of snakes' language.

The story is so romantic in a gentle, very magical way, and [livejournal.com profile] megyal's writing is beautifully fresh, full of poetry, with a lovely light touch, and an original take on old tropes.

Here's the complete disclosure bit: I adored everything as I read the story, but thinking about it now, there were maybe a couple of things that didn't totally make sense. It could of course be the fact I was reading it when I was half awake :D It sort of adds to the surreal charm, but perhaps could annoy you if you like all your loose ends tied up perfectly, without any questions left unanswered.spoilery detail under cut... )
I thought further about what I said above. re: loose ends, and I think it's the sign of a confident writer when not everything has to be spelled out for one's readership. I'd like to develop this within my own writing - a lovely beta did once comment that I don't have to explain everything in such detail, I can trust people to join the dots.

I really hope you all give this fic a try. I think Truffles has stolen a little piece of my heart today; I'm going to reread this later because it was just that delicious.

Time to claim my [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair fic. This was a fabulous fest, I thought. I loved every bit of it, from the whole theme, to the prompts, to the amazing fic and art, the book cover designs, and the generous and enthusiastic commenters. I didn't manage to read everything yet,  but I found some real favourites.

Here's my contribution::

Title: Rarely Pure and Never Simple
Rating: NC-17
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Summary: Harry never thought taking a job as Draco Malfoy's bodyguard was going to be easy. Add in a curse that makes Malfoy even more of an obnoxious git than usual, and Harry's got serious problems.
Word Count: ~29,000
Author's Notes: Thank you to my delightful betas. [livejournal.com profile] omi_ohmy, you saved this fic many times over with your patience, advice, and your gentle encouragement! [livejournal.com profile] who_la_hoop, you have the power to turn straw into gold. The parts of this that you grappled with are infinitely better for it. Smooches to both of you. [livejournal.com profile] capitu, thank you for this dream of a prompt!
birdsofshore: (curlew)
Title: This Monstrous Need
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Harry / Draco
Word count: ~2500
Warnings/Content (highlight to view): *Potions accident leading to hate sex. Very dubious consent / non-con *
Summary: The potions cupboard is really much too small for two people, let alone two people who can't stand each other. But with this urgent, unmistakable need in my stomach, pulling me forwards, Potter's warm body suddenly looks like the finest thing I've ever seen.

A/N: This was for the Imperius Challenge at [livejournal.com profile] hp_darkarts. Thank you so much to [livejournal.com profile] who_la_hoop for the beta. <3

This is not my usual fluff. PLEASE HEED THE WARNINGS! Once again, I don't know what to say. I don't know where this came from, but I am ashamed of how much I enjoyed writing it :DD

I also wanted to say to any new / recent friends that this fic and the incesty poetry the other day are NOT representative of what I usually write, honest!

This is the last day of Rectober! Do jump in if you want to participate; even one good rec is a fabulous thing  ♥

I am so happy I managed to complete my own challenge which was to post recs twice a week for the whole month. Some weeks it was hard, and personally I would struggle to fit that in every month, but I enjoyed it, and I'd definitely like to rec regularly again, perhaps monthly rather than weekly, I'm not sure.

Anyway just one final rec as I am short of time today, but it's a corker:

today's rec... )

A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS PARTICIPATED IN RECTOBER! I'll post something wrapping it up in the next few days, but it's been great to see so many recs flying around during the month, and I have discovered some new favourite fics and made some new LJ friends, as well. \o/
birdsofshore: (curlew)
I've seen this meme going around and thought what a great idea it was. However, I decided to make it more exciting (for me, that is, heh) by adding an element of randomness to the whole proceedings.

Basically, if you decide to play, I will give you something. BUT! In the spirit of Halloween mischief, you may not like what you get. I will ROLL A DICE to find out what scary fabulous thing to award you.

Trick or Treat )
birdsofshore: (curlew)
Help! I am running out of month! Here in the nick of time is my sixth rec post for Rectober, with 2 more to come next week.

OK this time I am cheating a bit. Again. It's not all fic. But it could be very inspiring.NSFW photo under the cut )

I love talking with you all here each week / day / hour / insert own level of addiction, but I often think I don't even know basic stuff about your LJ , like what your username means, what your icons are, etc etc. Come and tell me everything.

Reveals are up at [livejournal.com profile] hp_drizzle, and I can claim this ridiculous piece of smutty fluff as mine.

Title: The Joys of Nature
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
Word Count: ~2500
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): Contains mention of intimate activities not normally conducted up a tree. The use of Madam Bronzina's tanning oil contrary to the manufacturer's instructions.
Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No profit is being made, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Notes: Thank you to dear [livejournal.com profile] omi_ohmy, who is the loveliest beta to send a naked sunbathing Draco to. Thanks also to the mods for running this inspiringly-themed fest!
Summary: The prompt was "getting caught sunbathing nude." This is more or less exactly what you would expect, only sillier.

... and I can't watch it.

This sounds like something dredged up from the murky waters of my sub-conscious, I know. However then it would probably have Nick Grimshaw and Nicolas Cage in it, as well.

However, this is a REAL THING.

"Pairing up with MTV, “Kill Your Darlings” stars Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan have pitched a fake Kickstarter project, “Snowy River,” mocking the celebrities who seek millions in funding from us common folk.

Requesting only four thousand-hundred million dollars from their fanbase, Radcliffe and DeHaan promise to deliver a scriptless movie with questionable acting talent and virtually no plot. “This is going to be an entirely improvised film,” emphasized Radcliffe.

The “concept art” movie takes place in Brooklyn, because Brooklyn “is like crazy hot right now” and focuses on the lives of Joey (Radcliffe) and his childhood friend, Captain Animal (DeHaan). Joey has an accent. There is lots of hardcore sex (actual, authentic sex). There is singing. And, as if that’s not enticing enough — for donations of $50 or more, droll “Harry Potter” star Alan Rickman will watch TV with you for entire evening."

Here's where you can read more about it and watch this no doubt hilarious spoof interview - IF YOU LIVE IN THE US. Because, as usual, MTV videos ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN THE UK.

Help make Daniel Radcliffe's sex-filled Kickstarter a reality.

Yep. Have a good time watching that, and laughing your arses off. IN AMERICA.

I hate everything.

E.T.A. WELL LOOKEE HERE :DDDD

Throwing a tantrum totally worked, yay!

Daniel is funny. And Dane is so cute. ENJOY, ALL YOU BRITISH TYPES. We're only 3 days behind the Americans.

Title: At Dawn
Pairing: Reader's interpretation (m/m)
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Incest, possible underage, possible dub-con? I don't even know what happened here.
Summary: Erm. I wrote 11 haikus about incest. Like you do.
A/N: I fail at reading instructions. I started this for a recipient at [livejournal.com profile] hd_owlpost and then realised the pairing for all the owlpost gifts was meant to be H/D. Unbetaed. Posting so I didn't totally waste my time. Running away before I regret it.

We are over halfway through Rectober now, and SO MANY people have been posting recs. Here's the latest list of participants: (please let me know if I've missed you off):

Our delightful and dedicated reccers )

THANK YOU EVERYONE! ♥ ♥ ♥
I have seen loads of you posting recs, but if you haven't managed to post yet, there's still time to get going. Here's a template if you're in a hurry:

A couple of people have asked if it is too late to join in. Not at all; Rectober runs all the way up until Oct 31st. There is more info here at my journal , but basically just post a rec, let me have your name if you'd like to be added to the list, and tag your post "rectober". That's it! All fandoms, all pairings, all genres welcome. Here's a list of the recs that were collected in the first week alone. Do browse the participants' journals if you'd like some recs, and if you have time, do leave some encouragement if you see recs being posted.

If you are reccing: How are you finding it? Is it difficult to think of recs, or difficult to only choose your favourites? Are you enjoying it? Any problems? What would make it easier? Do you think you'll carry on after Rectober is over?

If you've been reading: Have you had some good tips? Found some gems, or revisited old favourites? Have you seen more people reccing than usual? Tried a new pairing, or maybe a new fandom? (*cough*  One Direction *cough*)

Writers and artists: Did your piece get recced? Did it give you a thrill? Did you get any extra reads and comments as a result?

TELL US ALL YOUR FABULOUS RECTOBER STORIES :DDD
birdsofshore: (curlew)

Ugh, I got behind already! This should have come last week, but I got all distracted with Tom Felton and that thing about the Vanishing Cabinets, and who knows what. I'll make THREE POSTS this week instead. Man oh man, I am a slavedriver :D

THREE CRAZY NON-HARRY/DRACO PAIRINGS for you today!

This way to the recs )
