This meme thing
May. 11th, 2016 10:59 pmI got tagged. Possibly a few times? LJ is not pinging me! I feel behind with everything - I haven't answered all of my comments from DTH yet, and I'm behind on stuff, and I've missed important posts, and I'm praying like mad not to get tagged on
wand_in_a_knot until the weekend.... I'm so tired and rather overwrought and I should be sleeping, but here I am, meming.
Favorite Character?
Draco Malfoy
Er. You possibly knew that already. Why do I love Draco so much? Two main reasons:
1) yes, JKR, I fucking DO love a bad boy.
2) This is from the wonderful Late Bloomers by
thistle_verse:
He could love Draco Malfoy, probably, not in spite of his flaws and contradictions, but because of them. And that meant that he, too, could be loved for all the dark inside himself in turn.
God, I love those lines SO MUCH. I wrote some more about this subject a while ago, if you'd like to read emotional waffle about Draco Malfoy. 6 and a half reasons why it's OK to love Draco Malfoy.
Which House?
I always come out Slytherin in House quizzes, and at Pottermore, but I don't really feel I belong there.I'm not cool and sexy enough. I am quite a softie and while I am sometimes ambitious, I'm a bit too polite about it. I like being sneaky, but I get so excited about the fact that I'm being sneaky that I am a complete dork about it and usually blow it. *sigh* I wish I could be a real Hufflepuff, but I'm too selfish and not really a team player. I call myself a Slytherpuff, which is ludicrous. I don't know. I wish I had a proper House!
Patronus?
A curlew, of course. (See icon. It's a comically long-billed, dorky bird. I adore them).
Favorite Class?
Potions. It fascinates me. And, Snape. But, being realistic, I was utterly shit at chemistry at school, and I am a terrible cook. So I'd probably fail.
Would you make the Quidditch team?
hahahahaha NOPE. I have dyspraxia and am scared of heights.
If you do, which position?
I'll be the one wearing the lion hat and squealing.
Favorite teacher?
Snape. I was a Snape fangirl before I fell for Draco. He's still one of my favourite characters. I think JKR does some genius things with him in the books.
First or second Dumbledore?
I usually think whichever one I am watching at the time is the best. I don't have a strong opinion about it, really.
Least favorite character?
Voldemort. Let me clarify - I don't mean that I hate his qualities and what he stands for. I actually hate him as a character, as a device in the series. I am left really cold by him, and sort of irritated, and I find the film version strangely bland and often really cringey. I want to LOATHE a villain, to be left feeling shivery all over by him, or horrified, or frightened, or something MORE than what I feel for Voldemort. I love what JKR did with the young Tom Riddle. But Voldemort... I just don't know. Does this make any sense?
I notice a lot of people have answered Umbridge to this question, and I understand why, but again, speaking about the characters themselves as creative inventions of JKR's mind, I find Umbridge completely fucking fabulous. She's a joy of a villain. Utterly repulsive. I adore her existence even as I deplore her actions.
Most useful spell?
Oh, Accio, definitely. Every time you lose something? Accio mobile phone. Every time you can't be arsed to get up? Accio chocolate. I'd wear my bloody wand out Accio-ing every 30 seconds.
Other than that, a Patronus would be pretty fantastic, if we see Dementors as a metaphor for depression, and a Patronus as something to ward off depression. I could definitely use one of those.
Writing Meme
1. Have you ever written in an unusual place?
I usually have to be in a quiet, safe, reasonably tidy, preferably SILENT place. I find it very hard to concentrate otherwise. Which is probably why I get so little written, heh. But I have also attempted writing on a train, on the tube, and in a park.
2. The word/phrase you know you overuse, but can’t get rid of.
Oh, ALL the fucking words. "Just." "Rather." "A little." I overuse some really ludicrous words, too, but if you didn't notice them already, I'm not going to point them out so that the next time you read something of mine, you go, "oh YEAH."
3. Do you keep notes? Do you have a notebook?
I make notes on my phone a lot. And I usually have a doc of notes for each longer fic I write, or leave notes on the doc if it's a shorter fic. For a longer fic I can have several k of notes and ideas.
4. What’s the hardest part of a fic to write for you?
The ending, oh boy. And, apparently, the remainder of a story straight after THE BIG sex scene.
I emailed
lumosed_quill about this once, saying "I have written the smut part and now I hate this story and I can't finish it, in fact I never want to write anything ever again."
And she wrote back saying, "Yeah, you're always like that after you write them fucking." :DD
I was like, "I AM?" But I am. I actually think the only reason I get the beginning and middle part of fics written is because I know I'll get to the smut soon. I read so many people saying that they hate writing sex and I don't understand it. I hate all the OTHER bits, like, er, the story parts.
5. Have you ever based something in your fic on your personal experience? What was it?
God, everything. Really. I don't really know how to write anything else. When Mr Birds used to read my stuff he would laugh all the time and say, "Ha, that's you."
I'm not saying everything that happens to the characters has happened to me, obviously, but all of the feelings parts and that kind of thing. Lots of the locations. The characters' motivations. And *cough* some of the smut and the BDSM. Possibly.
Sometimes I set out to write one thing that's not connected to me at all, and it becomes something else, something very personal to me. Euphoria was like that. I meant to write a fun and smutty threesome and I ended up writing something that was extremely relevant to me and really mined some depths of jealousy and loss and frustration that I had been grappling with at the time. It made it tough to finish when I realised halfway through what was going on, but I think it made it a much better fic in the long run.
6. What’s that one fic you want to write but somehow know you never will?
I'd adore to write something really smart and complex. Like, a proper story! With a plot and a story arc and all of that. Not just jokes and fucking. But, then, when I'm reading, I really do enjoy jokes and fucking, so, I'm not trying to put myself down.
7. What do you usually do when you procrastinate?
Lord, what don't I do? Memes. That's a good one. ;) No, I usually just surf the internet in a mindless fashion. "Research" is another good one. That usually involves things like watching videos of men dancing in clubs. Or chopping wood with axes. Or shaving. :DD
8. What’s the funniest typo you’ve made?
I don't actually make a lot of typos, except when I switch to an unfamiliar keyboard. Naturally, while I was typing that sentence, I made about 50 typos. O_o
9. Do you listen to music when you write?
Not actually while I write, but often beforehand, if I have a song that's inspiring the fic I'm writing / helping me keep the mood rooted in one place. I listened to "I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor" a hundred times while I was writing last year's erised.
10. Your favorite comment a reader has left on your fic?
Oh, gosh, I don't think I could pick just one. I do have a favourite bookmark, I think, which is "HOLY BUCKETS". :DDD I had a post recently about favourite comments where I spoke about this at more length, but basically just about any comment is a joy. What I can never get over is where someone leaves you a string of comments on your stories over weeks or months and it becomes more like a dialogue. That's amazing. I love connecting with readers and other creators, and my hope for the future of fandom is that we move towards a place where this happens more frequently.
I tag EVERYBODY. If you haven't done this meme already, why not give it a try?

Ah I love your icon! My favourite is when you post a comment really enjoying something and you use the icon with the curlew's wings all spread out.
