Come and blether about Fantastic Beasts
Sep. 13th, 2013 06:40 pmI am still reeling from Tom Felton's tweet which slipped by us all, two days before the news about the films were announced. Here it is again:

The sneaky little Slytherin! Tagging it with #ifonly like that made it look as if he was just saying "Ah, if only there could be another HP film." But he meant (I think) "There IS a new HP film and IF ONLY I COULD BE IN IT" :-O
Surely they will take him up on this? Surely? DON'T BURST MY BUBBLE, NOW. I do adore Tom F and if he were to pop up as a Malfoy ancestor, even for a second, I would be soooo thrilled. Which got me to thinking - they could have LOADS of the HP cast appear and do fabulous cameos as their own ancestors. This would be truly lovely. Can you imagine watching the film and suddenly a Weasley pops up in 20s gear and it's Rupert Grint? HAH!

So, do you think it's going to be a stellar cast kind of thing as in the previous series, or is it going to be more of a sort of made for TV affair? *bites nails* And America. Hmm. Will it be mostly in America, or just a bit in America, or.... (I am trying to be open to new experiences, but am unsure how to feel about American HP...)
Anyway, we need to decide on a cast quite quickly, I think, just so we can tell JKR and then she can bear these actors in mind while writing :DD
I thought Colin Morgan for Newt. I know he's a little older but he's too beautiful not to use, really. Look, here he is all roaring 20s ready for his audition:

(More 1920s Colin here)
Then we need a dashing and dastardly rival. We'd better have someone blond, just because, erm, well, it looks nice in the fanart, doesn't it? :DD

I believe he is called Jeremy Dufour.
He looks good in period clothes:

and out of them:

This above one is PURELY FOR INFORMATION in case there needs to be scene where he and Newt roll around in some mud in an antagonistic way, then have to bathe together and then lie around on a bed. To get dry.
WHAT? IT COULD HAPPEN.
Finally we need some old Malfoys and people:

and oh, I suppose we have to have some beasts as well. They can all be played by the wonderfully odd Evanna Lynch who claims to want to be a Crumple-horned Snorcack in the new film.

So. That's sorted, yes? Or did I get it all wrong? Come and tell me all of the things.

Date: 2013-09-14 07:26 am (UTC)My default POC for most things is Naveen Andrews, because I think he's absolutely beautiful. Chiwetel Ejiofor is also one of my favourites. Godfrey Gao is so dreamy, I hope he gets more roles.
I think life for Wizards of Colour might be easier for one simple fact: concealing magic. In cases of oppression, and I'm assuming that it would happen far more in the Muggle world than the Wizarding, a glamour would help to pass-for-white, or a Notice-me-not charm. Sometimes, it's just easier to hide than to withstand the stares and the slurs, and any other state of measuring one's appropriate lightness, like the paper-bag test. That's how I feel, anyway. If they don't go interact with the muggle world, then I think that aspects of prejudice might stem from pureblood-or-not, which may or may not be influenced by the Muggle world. If it is, then an Ethiopian pureblood, or a pureblood descended from the Mughal emperors, might be seen as less worthy of consideration because they're not white. But, if we're taking from 'Magic is Might', then a person's skin colour might be less important than their magical heritage.
So of course things were different then, and also more of the same. Prime example: we're just talking about including PoC in the line-up because I know that the chance of non-white actors being cast for major roles is extremely slim. And most fancasts are like yours: glaringly of one race, the one that is always represented the most in mainstream Western media.
I'm also interested if a young Dumbledore might be presented, and aspects of his sexuality as well.

Date: 2013-09-14 07:52 am (UTC)Yes my fancast was obsessed with white and particularly Nordic looking people! I am glad you pointed this out, I'm embarrassed at myself. Now for your suggestions... we need some photos here....
what a gorgeous beard / hair combo
I feel like I have seen him in something, but I didn't recognise any from the list... I wish I got to the cinema more.
Yes, I think we can mostly certainly find space for all of these people, AND the cat, too :DD
I'd never considered using magic in order to avoid prejudice. I wonder if the widespread ability to change one's appearance would make people more or less tolerant of differences? I am guessing less, as with recent moves towards surgery and interventions to make our bodies as 'perfect' as they can be, there seems to be intolerance of anything seen as Less Than Optimal.
I would be wildly surprised if we saw a young, visibly gay Dumbledore. I just don't think they'll touch it, but. who knows? Am I being really cynical? I hope they prove me wrong on this one.
