I just got the [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest prompt I wanted! ♥

I did not get chucked out of [livejournal.com profile] slythindor100's drabble contest yet! ♥ (I reckon it was a close thing this week). And there's a new prompt in an hour and a half.

[livejournal.com profile] hd_remix and [livejournal.com profile] bottom_draco started posting today! ♥

By the way, what is the etiquette for commenting on adaptation fics / art when you are not familiar with the original? I can't really say "This looks great and I can see you've put a lot of work into it. However, I don't know any of the characters or get any of the jokes. Bye!"

Conversely, if I only comment on the ones I know about, that will be about 4 fics. O.o

I am the H/D monthly reccer at [livejournal.com profile] crack_broom this month! ♥ Erm. I had really better think about what I am going to rec.

Finally, you have to see this monster Lego model Hogwarts a fan made. ♥ The detail and scale of it is stunning! My boys want to know why I don't do cool stuff like that. We have had such fun looking at all the different rooms and discussing the scenes. There's going to be videos and timelapse of the set up in a week or two, so I am looking forward to getting over-excited all over again. Hooray for you too, Alice Finch, you crazy superb Lego lady!

I know how you feel. I'm so excited I can barely contain my fandom joy at the moment!

Good luck at the crack_broom! <3 I had such a hard time picking mines. I wanted to message someone and ask for advice! lol I very nearly did, too!

*drools on the Lego* And I thought I had a lot! XD

I havent been familiar with any of the source material so far so I've just treated the stuff as normal standard fic. "I like because" without worrying too much. People just want to know they did a good job making something that people like... so thats the part that matters. (At least thats what Im going with.)

I wish there were kudos here too. Because Yes, yes to what you said. :)

I actually do usually say something along the lines of "Even though I am not familiar with the original, I really liked X, Y, Z." I mean mostly likely a person would enjoy it better if they were, but unless you plan to go back and read all the originals, you're kinda stuck. LOL It's possible some won't need that kind of comment but if you say, "Wow, I loved ABC!" and it turns out that is directly from the original, that's a bit embarrassing too.

Yes, the familiarity with the source work was making me wonder too. I suppose some things will work for me and others won't - just have to hope I'm familiar with lots of them!

I was pretty conscious of the fact that not everyone may be familiar with my source material (my beta wasn't!!!) and tried to make sure that my entry was able to stand on its own, if that makes sense. Like: if someone was familiar with the source, they would see the parallels and recognize the plotline, but if someone else wasn't, everything would still make sense to them as a cohesive story, pre-existing knowledge of the original wouldn't be necessary for comprehension. I'm sure that other people took this into consideration as well, so I'd say you can probably just comment the same way you would for a non-adapted fic in those cases.

I'm actually really excited for the entries that are adapted from works I'm not familiar with. It may be a good way to find new things to love!!

Ooh, Smoochfest! I must go look at the prompts!

I am really excited over the bottom_draco and hd_remix fests, seeing as I am taling part in both! I have the same problem as you with the adaptations fest, I won't know the original material in most cases. I'll just have to comment with no reference to the original.

Where did that crazy lady find the space for the huge model?

Ooh, the flying (flapping?) curlew, you must be excited! I look forward to lots of great fics to read, and your wonderful recs too. My approach to the adaptations is I will read the fics which look interesting, and comment on the adaptation if I know the original.

As for lego, Mr Omi sent me this link just so that I could show you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=K3PXYvuxivg (it is too late / I am too tired to do a nice link or embed the video properly, sorry).

That Hogwarts model is so impressive. And it's not even just an empty shell, it's every.single.little.detail! My daughter thinks we should build one just like it.

I'm freaking out a little about smoochfest. I got the prompt I wanted, and I have a great idea for a fic, but it's my first big fest and I'm nervous. But all the prompts look so great, I can't wait to see what people are going to do with them!

If it reassures you at all, I'm freaking out about smoochfest too - I've written quite a few fest fics over the past year, but until the story is flowing it does feel nerve-wracking! You sound like you are ready to go, I'm sure your story will be great and I look forward to reading it in June!

Thank you.
I've decided to stay up and write the first scene tonight, and hopefully when I can see that it's on the right track, I'll stop worrying so much and just enjoy writing.

It must have cost a small fortune! Lego isn't a cheap toy. And it must have taken ages to build.

I'll probably panic later and ask someone to read my first draft, just to see if it's entirely hopeless.

Oh my goodness, I am with you! I'm completely overwhelmed today to the wonderful awesome scary thing that is fandom.

I'm psyched you got your Smoochfest prompt (!!!) and that you decided to sign up at all!!! I got my top choice too and holy hell, I kind of wonder if I'm getting in over my head with this one... the story I have in mind...oi!

And yes, so many fantastic fests starting to post today and I fell waaaaaay behind in reading the Veela fest fics and the Kinkfest fics. And there is another fest I'm writing for and another story besides that and... ZOMG OVERWHELM.

It's wonderful though, isn't it? So much lovely fic to read and flailing to do and words to write. But this fandom deserves it all and more. <3

PS I think that Lego castle may be bigger than my entire apartment! o.O

Well, it wasn't so much the prompt, but what I intend to do with it. We'll see if I can pull it off.

I'm so glad you did! I can't wait to see which one you chose!

hurray adaptations! I think um... comment on the ones that you're interested in/read? and if you don't know what to say, say something like OMG THAT WAS AWESOME (even though I'm not familliar with the original) YOU STILL HAVE MY ETERANL FOREVER LOVE! *hugs and kisses* or something.

I'm thinking I might try to read the originals first before reading the remix (as long as they're referenced enough to be found). Double the fic, right?
