So, what do we think about Eddie Redmayne apparently being confirmed in the role of Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts film?

If you're not sure who he is, he's a British actor who recently won a lot of awards for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Personally, I think I'm fairly happy about it.

Is there a different actor you hoped would star in the film? Let me know all of your thoughts in the comments, please!

Oh I think it was big enough. But I've seen almost no movies since Beth was born (last movie was Hobbit 1? Guardians of the Galaxy? Avengers? idek XD)

Well, I'm not a good person to ask, anyway, since I tend not to keep up on recent movies and their stars. I see that [livejournal.com profile] _hannelore knew who he was right off!

We shall see about that. Same director and production team, though. A script is just a script, not the full movie.

Damn. It was things that really ate at me about the Potter movies was putting someone else's words in another person's mouth or having characters say or express things they never would in the books. I do like the prop team for the Potter movies, that is a behind the scenes bit I always enjoyed. Now I am back to being less hopeful.

The Fantastic Beasts movies are not going to be book adaptations, which I am grateful for. I enjoyed the HP movies but they don't come close to the books. Imho, especially the later ones are run-of-the-mill adaptations that either stayed way too close to the books, or made odd, unnecessary divergences for no good reasons. And I really hated some of the special effects. Awesome props, yes. :)

Haha! Oh, don't worry, I meant that literally -- I really have some sort of problem with faces, I've even failed to recognise my own friends :P

Oh, i do like Cucumberpatch, so maybe i'll like this guy. I think i like people more when they're not conventionally pretty, but are captivating in other ways.

Wasn't he in Les Mis? Or am I thinking of someone else? Anyway, I agree, a person of color would've been really good here, but I've only ever seen 'swarthy' used to describe white people with ruddy, sort of rough-looking skin. Like a pirate. Or Johnny Depp in a pirate movie.

I rather liked him in My Week with Marilyn and Les Miserables, and he apparently did a great job in the Stephen Hawking film, so he'd probably do a good job for these too. And I must admit I find him awfully attractive, that boyishness and the freckles.

My first exposure to him was as Marius in Les Mis, and he was actually very very good. I usually find Marius a bit dull, but he made him work.

Don't really have any opinions on this movie or this casting though, since there really isn't much canon to go off of. It'll be interesting to see what they do!

I think this is a great point. It would have been awesome to have a POC main character in an HP film. This is true even though, as birds said, 'swarthy' is not really a positive descriptor, and not one I would use for a black person.

This is off topic, but I always think of 'swarthy' as the perfect description of all the men on my mother's side of the family. They're 'white', but 'ethnic' looking. My cousins and uncles all have dark olive skin and heavy 5-o'clock shadows by noon (think 'Brad Garrett' from Everybody Loves Raymond and you'll be pretty close). My grandpa looked almost *exactly* like Fred Flintstone. So mom's side of the family is very definitely on the dark end of 'white'. My dad is from scots-Irish stock, however, and I inherited my lily-white skin from him. So not swarthy. But one of my sisters takes after my mom and has darker skin and hair than me. Genetics is weird.

I should have known though, I actually watched a short documentary on that film not long ago xD Oh man, I don't know what I have... I'm always very scared I won't recognise my friends though, I make them meet me in very specific places because I feel so ashamed when I can't spot them! D: D:
