So, what do we think about Eddie Redmayne apparently being confirmed in the role of Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts film?



If you're not sure who he is, he's a British actor who recently won a lot of awards for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Personally, I think I'm fairly happy about it.

Swarthy is an odd word. When I looked it up, it does say 'dark-skinned' but I've never thought of it as meaning black.

I've got such mixed feelings about the films. I have massive affection for them, and I think they got so many things wonderfully right, but when they miss the mark, they really miss the mark with style :/

Yes, boyish, freckly, posh, pretty, dorky... he's got a lot going for him!

His face would fit beautifully into one of your illustrations, IMO <3

Yes, JKR had a lot of free rein when she started writing this. I'm guessing that's partly what appealed to her about the project.

I'm definitely excited. Starting to feel like it is coming together nicely if they have people of the calibre of Eddie Redmayne on board.

LOL! I don't think of Matt as intellectual looking at all. But then...I would think that Newt should be rather intellectual, right? But I don't know if he could command a film audience.

I think Matt totally looks like an intellectual. Even more so with glasses. ;) As for Newt, I imagined him more the adventurous explorer type, Indiana jones-like, a hands-on guy with lots of experience rather than lots of indoor studying. It's going to be interesting how Rowling/the movies characterise him.

I love him, he's an incredible actor and deserves accolade for The Theory of Everything, his performance in that was mind blowing.

But I kind of hoped we'd get a relatively unknown actor. I'm sure he'll do it justice though.

Definitely agree that swarthy is a non-ideal descriptor (to say the least) but do understand why people have grabbed on. Outside of tumblr speculation I tend to associate it more with Mediterranean people than black people, but also would've been happy/intrigued to see an actor who complicates whiteness, particularly in a time and place where there was a massive, massive amount of immigration happening. But...nope. And therefore: sigh.

Yeah, totally agree about the descriptor and its connotations. I would've assumed Mediterranean before black from "swarthy," but would've been still been more okay with that, and would find that more interesting in the context - 1920s NYC, loads of immigration happening - than a posh white British guy. And could've seen it as a really interesting way to go, even, because, as you rightly point out, "white" is a much more complicated category than white or not white, and in that time and place "swarthy" didn't really count as white. So many interesting things to explore! Or, in this case...not.

I imagined Newt a bit more of the action/adventurer type, so I'm interested to see Redmayne's casting as probably bringing more to the role than that.

Oh, I do like that phrase, 'complicates whiteness'. Let's hope the rest of the cast might bring something more complicated to the table.
