I think she was, the tricksy mare! I do love her skill with ambiguous scenes, my favourite being Dumbledore's death, but for some reason this particular one frustrates me. I think because it's never resolved in canon, and perhaps I prefer loose ends to be more tied up.
When I looked back at the scenes from HBP, and also this new illustration as compared to the original sketch, it did seem quite clear that ambiguity was the aim all along.
