I think he's checking to see if it works with something that's a living creature, personally. Somewhere else in the discussion, it's pointed out that we hear the bird arriving alive at B+B's, so it doesn't make sense to me that it would arrive safely but then die on the way back.

But it's very interesting to see how we all agree / disagree!
