I know what you mean. I think JKR was unprepared for how many of us could empathise or really root for Draco in many ways. She gives us so many characters who we can relate to - many that break the mould of the usual 'hero' type characters - but she maybe didn't realise the attraction of the anti-hero, of the villain, of the flawed and damaged characters.
