Yes, and Sirius thought that Remus was a spy, which is why he didn't tell him about Peter being the Potter's Secret Keeper. The moments when they are reconciled so easily and totally, speak of a deep trust and friendship between them, but their willingness to believe the worst about each other contradicts this. There's obviously some massive backstory that explains it all :D I bet there's loads of R/S stories about it.
