It's really hard to know the story length beforehand. Once I tried to participate in a minibang because I was sure I couldn't make the big bang word count. It was supposed to be a short pwp but instead of the 10k words, the end result was almost twice that. But I tend to have only vague outlines and just wing it while writing so no wonder. ;)
