Title: Golden Age
Author: Anonymous
Inspired by Pottermore entry: B8. The Hufflepuff Common Room
Rating: R
Pairing(s): Harry/Draco; off-camera: Hermione/Pansy
Warnings/Content Notes: Environmentalism, alternative religion (or lack there of), unshakable socialism, food, hugs, a secret society, and perhaps some very interesting Muggleborns – it’s just a huge, liberal, Hufflepuff party.
Summary: The Celtic druids once made a decision that kept magic in abundance in Britannia, but they couldn’t account for the technological advances Muggles would make centuries later. Now magic is dying on the isles, and this is not a dark lord that Harry can fight. OR: Harry Potter doesn’t save the world this time, but he does get a lot of hugs.
This was a fascinating read. The MA completely convinced me that both Harry and Draco belonged in Hufflepuff, and it was such a compelling look at what it might be like to be in that House. The culture and the philosophy of Hufflepuff was evoked so richly that it's like an instant new headcanon. The fic contains tons of thought-provoking meta about Sorting and Hogwarts Houses in general. About the characters, each and every one of them - about relationships between the Houses, connections... so many insights, and I'm really in awe of how the MA's mind works (not for the first time, if my suspicions are correct ;)).
I'll be honest - it was a little more plotty than I personally like in a fic. This is not a criticism of the fic at all, more of a confession about how short an attention span I have. The developing relationship between Harry and Draco was more a part of the story, rather than THE story, but I still found it gripping and I know for some of you, the fact that it's not just another romance story will be another point in its favour.
I took so much from this story, things that are going to stay with me. Like the Hat refusing to re-sort Ron anywhere other than Gryffindor, LOLOL. The love that the MA has for the Harry Potter world just shines out of the whole fic. It's written with delicious insight and intelligence. I can't really sum up the experience of reading it, except I feel that it WAS an experience - something that has changed the way I look at canon. I highly recommend it. ♥
I hope Rectober is going well for you? I apologise for not having time to do much Rectober housekeeping at all this year, but I see wonderful recs here, there, and everywhere, and I still hope to come through with a list of contributors when it's all over.
