The Fantastic Beasts film is going to be released on November 18th, 2016!

Warner Bros announced the date yesterday for the series of "three mega movies".

I think it's high time to get our fancasts going again....

I know it's early days, but will you be going, do you think? Or are you planning to give it a big swerve?

I'm excited! Not even because of the HP verse, but rather because a well made fantasy film is a rare and wonderful thing. You'd have to hope that the budget and pressure upon them will mean that that's the outcome-

Gosh, yes. *whispers* I am not really a fan of fantasy. I know that sounds stupid, but torino said the same downthread, so I'm not the only HP enthusiast who doesn't really embrace fantasy as a genre. But I hope it will be magical, and beautiful, and perhaps even clever and funny?

I am definitely on the fence. I think perhaps not since there aren't going to be any versions of the characters I already know and love. It depends on my original group of HP friends, the Inny Bitches, though. If they make an effort to all meet up in the same city to watch it, I'll probably set aside my reservations and go for the camaraderie.

I will definitely watch it. I'm still a bit sceptical, but as Rowling is the writer for it I have some hope that it can be good :) still sooo far away, though! I'm excited to see who they'll be casting!

I'm not 100% convinced, either, but we could be in for a real treat. I prefer to be cautiously optimistic. It's got JKR, a superb magical world, and a ton of money. How bad can it be? (don't answer that O_o)

I will be going to see it, but I just realised that if it takes that long to come out my son may be too cool to come with me (I mean he's already too cool, but he doesn't realise, bless him XD)

I don't think kids necessarily get too cool for HP. All the coolest people I know are still very much into it ;-)

Yeah, I was thinking more that he'd be too cool to be seen with his mum LOL. I don't think anyone is too cool for HP. I love how it's been a huge part of growing up for some people.

I'll probably go see the first one at some point (though that point may be when it's released on video). Whether I'll see a second or third will pretty much depend on how good or how bad the first one is.

It will be interesting to see what this does to canon. Right now I consider the books canon, and the movies as interesting and high-powered fanfiction. What will we make of the new story canon when movies are all we have? I guess I'll be hoping for a published script.

Now that's a novel description! You're going a bit further than the description I used, up thread, of 'canon-inspired' works, but I can see totally where you are coming from. We're not used to new canon being presented in the form of films in this fandom, and it certainly feels rather strange.

I want to see it, but it all depends whether cinemas where I'll be living in 2016 will have it in the original English version or not (I don't like the dubbed versions, they just feel so alien) and whether there's an option to see it not in 3D (because 3D glasses+my normal glasses=pain on my nose for the duration of the movie)

I am also hoping for the non 3D version! I wonder what the cinema industry will be like in 2.5 years and whether 3D will totally have taken over. I like to have the choice.

I'm mostly leaning toward no. In part I am simply not a big fantasy fan. I like HP in spite of the fantasy elements, not because of them. Also, it's new movie canon. A subtle distinction, perhaps, but still different than a book, IMO.

ETA: Regarding fantasy, I didn't mean, for example, I'd prefer HP without magic or something. I do love though that Harry has a foot in both worlds and in fact love fic which manages to pull elements from both rather than ignoring anything Muggle. It's more things like extensive information about werewolf pack politics that make me snooze (apologies to anyone who adores it--that is the beautiful thing about fandom, there is something for everyone!). Anyway, since it's "beast" related, yeah, that's more what I was trying to get at. Sorry that got a bit tl;dr.

Above someone mentioned whether it will be within HP or have its own fandom and I do wonder whether as time passes we will have more splinter groups like Star Trek does. So we'd have book fandom, movie fandom, now Fantastic Beasts fandom, eventually reboot fandom, etc.

I completely agree with you - I'm not a fantasy fan, and always feel like I am a really crap geek as I don't really like things like Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings or even superhero films. I just basically fucking love Harry Potter XDD

I find it exciting to think of splinter groups, though! Our fandom will be large and diverse; I think I like that idea.

My answer is yes yes YES! I can't wait!!

I was skeptical at first, but then I read Newt's intro material to FB, and I'm kind of already in love with his character and very curious to see him in his element. And the fact that JKR is writing the script herself makes me excited and hopeful.

Also, I can't wait until they start announcing casting decisions and releasing stills. I bet there will be fic written before the film is even released. I'm down for anything that breathes life back into the HP franchise!

I think I'll go because I'm curious but... I'm not sure I want anything added to HP... I don't know why though. I love it the way it is, and am happy to imagine what happened before with what she already gave us!

And anyway, it'll have to be pretty damn good for people to get interested in it, otherwise it will be like Star Wars were the "real" ones for most fans are the old episodes...

And somehow adding something to canon might close doors for our own fantasies (very selfish thing to say I must admit). It's like, just imagine if JKR decided to write an eighth book for HP in which (example chosen randomly, lol) Harry divorces Ginny to be with the love of his life, Draco Malfoy... It would kill all the fun to me! :P

I think the best canon remains open to possibilities, doesn't it. That's why people loathe the Epilogue with such a vengeance... it adds nothing meaningful, and closes about 50 doors, all at once. Gah!

But, perhaps Fantastic Beasts will add some new, irresistible characters. Some sexy villains... some handsome heroes... Are you not even a little bit hopeful? :DD

I will totally go and see this, especially if I get to go with fandom friends! I'm really excited to see what they will do with it. And okay, there won't be the characters we know & love, but maybe their ancestors will have a role?!

I'm totally hoping for some Malfoys in it. Wouldn't that be fabulous? And I can also imagine some kind of framing device including the present day HP characters, with, e.g. Ron reading the book as a bedtime story to his kids?

I mean we get BRAND NEW HP STUFF! other than Newt Scamander this will be BRAND NEW we never seen it before!!!!

and it's in the US! (as much as I love the UK and hope she keeps exploring european wizard world- this being in the US it be exciting! because the US is so different from the uk in so many ways so the contrast is going to so much fun to see develop!

and Wizard fashion in the 20s! and do American wizards do spells in latin too?
