Draco Tops Harry monster rec post

I meant to do this as I went along, and now I am reaping the wotsit of my own indolence. There are LOADS of lovely fics over at dracotops_harry, and here are a few of my favourites so far.

Also, I wanted to go on the record and come clean as being someone who used to think topping / bottoming preferences were weird. I thought it was a bit sad, childish or even creepy, if I am completely honest. (Yeah, right, because everything I do around here is so MATURE and NORMAL O_o). I still can't personally relate to ONLY reading one person topping, but I completely get the idea of fests based around one or the other.

If I had to pick a favourite, for me it would definitely be Top!Draco. Although capitu pointed out to me that I write Top!Harry more often in my own fics. How did that happen? I didn't believe her, and had to go and check. She was right.O_o Anyway, this is a roundabout way of saying 'Sorry I used to think it was weird.' I didn't actually SAY anything much about it being weird, but I THOUGHT it quite a lot. :DD I was wrong. Topping / bottoming preferences are perfectly good kinks just like any other, and perfect fests like dracotops_harry grow out of them. So, hoorah.

Title: A Fox's Bargain
Summary: Harry made a bargain with Draco. He knew it was going to come back and bite him on the arse, he just didn’t think about what exactly Draco would ask for. Draco would say that Harry must have known deep down what he was agreeing to, but then Draco is a prick and what would he know?
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): Non-con kiss (at the beginning), dub-con sex, fingering, rimming, orgasm denial, D/s dynamics, unredeemed!draco (he’s an arsehole).
Word Count: 6000

This is just the most heavenly dub-con scenario, with delicious smutty details ladled on like whipped cream and a cherry on top. Arsehole!Draco FTW! My favourite part is the way Harry is completely manipulated and used, but comes out of it (despite grumpy attempts not to enjoy it at all) having had a whale of a time.

Title: let me see you stripped (down to the bone)
Summary:

"So," Malfoy said. "Are you in? Or are you out?" He turned and looked at Harry squarely.

Harry remembered the slow way Malfoy had slid his hand down his own stomach, into his pants – the outline of his long fingers gripping and stroking his own cock. The way his head had fallen back, exposing his pale throat. How he had owned them all.

I don't even know how Harry and Draco as strippers works, but it SO DOES. Filthy, filthy onstage dancing and smut. It's really hot and heavy and intense and insane and marvellous.

Title: In the Interest of Interhouse Cooperation
Summary: Organizing a Duelling Club was supposed to be a fun extracurricular activity for Harry’s 8th year. But add in Draco Malfoy and a malfunctioning Room of Requirement, and things can’t help but get complicated.
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): A slight bit of dominance during sex, and maybe a teensy bit of dub-con.
Word Count: 12k

THIS FIC! It was written for my prompt, and it's just such a joyous romp through lots of my favourite tropes and kinks, and buckets of lovely lovely UST. I might go and read it again right now :DD

Title: Save My Wonders
Summary: Immediately chocolate assaulted Draco's senses. Warm melted chocolate mixed with his mother's roses and... something else. Something new. Freshly scrubbed skin and maybe a faint sheen of sweat. It was so familiar...
And it only intensified when Potter came up behind him...
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): chubby!Draco, angst relating to body issues (no fat shaming)
Word Count: ~21K

This was charmingly romantic, warm and sweet , funny, and hot, too. Draco and his insecurity, and Harry with his cheerful smittenness, are both delightful. A real heart-warmer.

Title: Touched
Summary: On the insistence of his parents, Draco begins to see a therapist to discuss his difficulties with physical intimacy. When he changes his appointment time, Draco discovers he’s not the only one seeking assistance as a result of events which occurred during the war and he finds comfort in the most unexpected of places.
Rating: R
Warning(s): Post traumatic stress disorder, erectile dysfunction, mental health related matters.
Word Count: ~7,300

This was another nice change of gear, gentle, wistful and tender. It wasn't too angsty, but I liked the way the characters were allowed to be flawed, and their relationship didn't end up unrealistically perfect.

Title: Let’s Go Outside
Summary: Harry’s done with the sofa, the hall and the kitchen table, baby.
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): EWE. Lots and lots of sex, most of it public, not all of it involving Harry/Draco, a little, er, decorative arm wrapping for fun (it might be a little bit bondage-y, but nice, you know, with silky fabric and stuff), etc. Very little plot.
Word Count: 24,339

The best way I can describe this is 24,000 words of GUH. With a little nggggggh and a generous helping of asdfghjklksdgfhjkll. OK, MA, why don't you just take ALL my favourite kinks, roll them together in a big ball of crazy hotness, and tie them up with a pretty ribbon? Yes, that'll do nicely. I read this one late at night under the covers with my jaw hanging open, thinking, just another 5 minutes, then I'll stop.

Read most of these and loved them.

On the note of preference. I prefer top!Draco but I also prefer pregnant!Draco. It's a conundrum. My preferences are weird and don't make sense so I try not to make sense of them. (I also really like pregnant!top!Draco, I know right?). Kinks don't make sense, they just happen.

Agreed with vaysh; I feel like I've been somewhat pushed to be... I guess closeted with officially stating a preference. I mean, I have, and anyone reading my recs or fics can probably guess (though silly birds throwing people off the trail with her preference by writing mostly the reverse)... But so often topping/bottoming *isn't* treated like a kink. It's treated like "oh must be 50/50 with no preference or else it's not a relationship of equals and if you have a preference, it is somehow also secretly internalized misogyny on your part"

And, no, I just find it really hot when a desperate Draco takes it up the arse >.< I also find it hot when there's dirty talk, or frottage, or mpreg, or bowjobs. *throws hands in air*

I mean, I think the bad name comes from the fic that treat the bottom as a girl with a nominal penis, but it reads like an old Mills and Boon with explosions of light and waterfalls and orbs and the like. And really backwards, misogynistic representations of helpless feminine bottom and hypermasculine alphamale top.

And I don't like those either >.< It's okay to like one bottoming more than the other. It doesn't have to mean anything.

(I'm only half following DTH, but I love the ones you recced that I've read, which I think is most of them? I'm in denial about finishing my mpreg and am a bit overloaded with fests with remix/hurtfest/dth all on top of each other. XD)

To be honest, i don't like top/bottoming preferences. Or, specifically for Harry/Draco, because for me the pairing works because they are equals, and exclusive top/bottoming roles (can) creates a power imbalance that i find hugely irksome. That said, it's all in the writing, and i am hugely picky on how the characters (especially Draco) are portrayed. SO, my choosing to take part in the dracotops_harry fest is less about my preference for top!Draco, and more about seeing the kind of Draco i don't see written often enough--a stronger, more well-rounded Draco, a less feminised or "weak" Draco.

I have many Draco feels, is what i'm saying, and don't think he's written enough to my liking, on the whole. The DTH fest has more of what i enjoy in Draco character, the fact that he is topping is... coincidental and kind of irrelevant to me.

Yes, that makes a lot of sense to me! I like strong, capable Draco very much, too - that's a definite yes for me. I also really enjoy power imbalances, though - that has a great appeal for me, although I don't really like it if one character is highly feminised and weak, and that's expressed through topping / bottoming.

I also like it where one character is strong, and masculine, and capable, and all of that, but likes to bottom. And switching. I like switching! I mostly like ALL OF THE THINGS, really :D

Ya know, a discussion of the whole top/bottom thing might be good. Not here, although I will say that, like you, I used to be weirded out by all the preferences one way or the other. I don't really care what others do anymore. It's just not where I'm at, but to each their own. I did stop following both Harry tops and the Draco tops boards/fests a few years ago. Not because I didn't want to read awesome fics, but because of the whining and bitching that went on between those with nazi-level preferences. They sort of spoiled it for me.

These days I just let it all go right past me and ignore most of it and while I really don't want to go back to all the whinging, I miss some good fics. So I am utterly dependent on people rec'ing the awesome fics they find! So thanks for these.

I wasn't really thinking what a touchy subject it can be, when I dived in with those remarks. I'm sorry if I've stirred up old disagreements. I think live and let live is a good mantra where people's kinks are concerned, but of course we all probably secretly have some things that we think are beyond the pale XDD

It's never pleasant when somebody tries to dictate what others want to read / write / squee about, I agree. And I'm glad if my recs help you discover some things you would have otherwise missed!

When I say I have a preference for top!Draco, it doesn't stop me enjoying a fic where Harry is topping, or they switch, at all. It's just in the absence of all other considerations, I'll probably like the idea of Draco giving it to Harry more than the other way round :DDD

I haven't read all of these, but so far I think "Save My Wonders" and "In the Interest of Interhouse Cooperation" are my favourites. I liked chubby!Draco with his insecurities, it's always nice when they are attracted to each other despite imperfections. And the other was super hot and funny!

About topping/bottoming - I don't really have any preferences. Exclusively reading one of them would make me miss out on a lot of amazing fics I think. I don't mind that people have preferences, though, but if it's a lot of focus on it in a fic it weirds me out a bit. I mean - if I was a gay man I'd like to try both, change it up a bit every now and then :P

I like it when an author can convince me that their head canon is the correct one, even if differs from mine. I'm perfectly happy to believe in top!Harry, top!Draco, or anything else the author wants me to, if it's well-written and engaging. I can't actually think of any detail of my head canon that HAS to be present for me to read and enjoy a fic.

But, yes, I think most fun would be had by at least trying both?

I think everybody is entitled to have their preference. Personally I never pick a favourite fic based on who tops.

I wasn't going to butt in and yet I can't seem to help myself. :P

TL;DR My issue with topping/bottoming in fic is that it seems to bring a certain characterization with it. As if bottoming makes one submissive/feminized or somehow less than the other partner, like enjoying bottoming is a weakness or something to be embarrassed about. Not sure if it's the influence of D/s or Seme/Uke in anime/manga or if it is more RL experience. I know there are people who are strictly one or the other but nothing makes me back button faster than reading, "I don't bottom." I just know I am not going to care for the relationship dynamic as presented in that fic. In H/D specifically, I tend to write more top!Harry but with any slash pairing (unless it's expressly intended to be D/s/BDSM) I like to leave open the possibility they enjoy a variety of positions. The short version of my answer is taking it up the arse doesn't make you any less of a man, IMHO. Maybe I should have just said that first and saved you the trouble. ;)

I think a lot of people have that problem with the topping / bottoming dynamic and I completely understand what you're saying. I was thinking about it some more, and one thing I quite like is if one character (*cough* Draco) says they won't bottom, and it's really a sign of their insecurity / trust issues, etc. Refusing to bottom is actually an expression of their brokenness, in a way. This seems very believable to me, and I enjoy that dynamic. I like Harry having confidence / trust / openness enough to let Draco top. I find it hot, and romantic, too. And I love it when somebody writes a very masculine character who really, really loves to bottom.

There are so many fun things to do with topping / bottoming, that I think it's a shame to ALWAYS have to have them switching equally. Sometimes (only sometimes) it would take the teeth out of the dynamic between them.

So far I'd only read one of the fics you mention here, so thanks for giving me more to read. I'm not following the fest so I'm relying you my friends to help me find good stuff. ♥
(Which of course means I really need to do my own recs for Beholder and Snarry a Thon. *sigh*)

As for the top/bottom conundrum... I never did get what the the issue is. In my head everyone I write switches. Having one person exclusively top or bottom is never a deal breaker for me. As long as the fic is well written and I enjoy reading it, I'm good. :)
Now admittedly, I do prolly write more Top!Severus in Snarry, mainly because that seems to be the fandom default, although again, in my mind, they totally switch, as do Harry and Draco. Some people in Snarry fandom are pretty rabid about it, though. *shrugs* I honestly don't think about it unless I'm in a fest and it's a recipient request. Otherwise you take your chances. :)

oohhh top/bottom preferences!! If I were reading a longer story where there were multiple sex scenes, I enjoy switching. But I also have a lot of gay friends that have a position preference so I've learned (?) to understand that in fic too? I also like when it's mentioned that a character prefers one position, especially if it's like a kink negotiation between the characters? And I don't see bottoming as something that's exclusively "submissive" either, I love power-bottoming like no other!!

Buuuuut if there was only one scene with penetrative sex in a story and I had to pick, I like to go for bottom!Harry, haha! Though I'm sure I could name some favorite fic with bottom!Draco.

I don't think it's weird to have a preference for who tops or bottoms, just like it's not weird to have a preference for anything else in fanfic. I don't quite get how some people won't read one or the other entirely, but hey, to each their own. Personally, I like them boning any way they can get it on. :D
