RECTOBER

I had an idea.

I used to write more rec posts, but sometimes it seems like it will take up too much time, and so I'll just fire off a link to a friend instead. However, I LOVE reading other people's recs. There are lovely people who rec regularly, and other lovely people who rec occasionally, when they feel like it, but I always wish there were more recs, particularly for current fests and fic / art that's being posted now. If there's a fest on and I've got a bit behind, it can seem so intimidating and I don't know where to begin, so a few recs can help me immensely. Even if I've already read the fic, I enjoy seeing what other people thought of it. And not forgetting the fact it is an enormous pleasure when something you've written gets recced (for some reason this is especially satisfying while it's still anon).

Anyway, I thought I would like to make a commitment to write MORE RECS during the next month. I want to make a rec post at least once a week - I'm hoping that with hd_fan_fair beginning, and lots of other fests continuing, this will be a piece of cake :D

I wondered whether anyone would like to join me? It would be so nice to see a kind of mini-explosion of recs during October. I even thought of a name. RECTOBER. Oh yes. It sounds a bit rectal, doesn't it? SO MUCH THE BETTER.

I can't do banners and clever things, but if anyone wanted to make a RECTOBER banner I would love you a lot.

I really love recs, too, and you have some great ideas here. I have noticed that very few people comment on rec posts, and sometimes I go back to let the reccer know I loved the fic/art they recced. It seems to me that is the missing step and would encourage the reccers more.

I also like the reccing communities - maybe one of those could be a place to post all of the recs for Rectober?

Yes, you are definitely right - reccers need comments to encourage them. I have a love/hate relationship with the Kudos button for fics, but it seems to me something like that or the Like button on facebook would be useful for just acknowledging that you've seen the rec post and appreciated it. But, I'm just making excuses. How long does it take to post "thanks"?

I personally think it would be great to see recs appearing everywhere on people's LJs, as well as on the reccing communities. I see people cross posting to crack broom or hd_storyroom sometimes, as well as on their personal journals, so that's always an option?

Cross-posting the recs for Rectober would be good. It is fun on the individual journals, but perhaps everyone is not everyone else's "friend" and might miss some. Personally, I am pretty sporadic about checking my feed, and I definitely miss quite a bit of what goes on.

Or maybe if someone wanted to take on a once-a-week post on a rec journal linking to all of the individual recs.

Probably making this too complicated! You should do it however makes you happy, and I'm sure we'll all have fun.

Cross posting and linking and all of this sounds very good indeed. I don't know if anyone will be arsed to DO it, but it sounds great :DD
