COMPLETE OUTRAGE

I got given Harry Potter trivia for my birthday, which is fab, and we've had a lot of fun with it.

BUT WOULD YOU LOOK AT THIS?

(Sorry they're sideways, by the way - I'm on my phone and I can't work it out).

Mr Birds is laughing but I am OUTRAGED. Gregory Goyle? How dare they! It's because they had to change it in the blinking film, isn't it, because the actor playing Crabbe was in prison... but that doesn't meant that Goyle ACTUALLY DID IT! *head explodes*

Mr Birds is questioning the validity of valuing one fictional version of events over another fictional version of events. Bastard.

I KNEW YOU'D ALL UNDERSTAND. Come and writhe in anguish and irritation with me.

Often when they have those online "quizzes", they use movie canon, too. Annoys the shit out of me. So, yes, anguish and irritation are justified. *nods*

(Is the game itself produced with permission from the movie company? I'd wager that would explain why they use that info.)

I doubt it's because you're invested in Goyle. It's because IT'S WRONG. *g* I sometimes liken this problem that fans like us have to scientists or IT people who have to go around and deal with people who don't actually have a fucking clue about the finer details of evolution or the inner workings of one's computer. Knowing too much ruins it for us when so-called normal people can enjoy themselves. LOL

RAGE!!!!!! Fierce and all-consuming!!!!!!

*shakes fist like mad*

*looks up for appropriate icon*

See? Tiny Draco is Not Amused.

Also, tell Mr Birds:

Spoke Is Not Amused

Nah. That's legit, tho, it's BULLSHIT! That's the reason I won't buy the HP trivia. I want HP BOOK trivia, not the movies. When I get all ragey about how different the films are That Guy I Married tells me to calm my tits and I tell him, "Don't talk to me about calming my tits, you were all kinds of ragey at Lucas for continuing to fuck with the original Star Wars Trilogy."

He says that's another matter entirely. BAH.

[identity profile] sp-owl.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The BOOK! The book came first and that's what they should go by! *shares outrage*

[identity profile] nearlyconscious.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes, I'm so annoyed that they did this!! I usually have 99% of the answers right and when I don't, I'm like "hold up... really?" and have to go get my books because it doesn't sit right with me (I mean, their questions are ridiculously easy and when they're not, it's because they're unaccurate!)

[personal profile] besamislabios 2015-10-11 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
How wrong and frustrating!! even if you knew all the books by heart you could still lose the game. :((

I don't think Mr Birds fully realises the graveness of this. I really don't.

I'll help you plot. I have a mean rubber duck you can use!

MALARKEY!

[identity profile] crazyparakiss.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no kidding! I don't mind the films (except for six. I still rage about that one. Visually was stunning but was an obvious attempt to compete with Twilight's shit and as a result showed little of the story I wanted to see). But I guess when they have people playing this game who've only seen the films it would be film canon. Even though it's not right. It's "right". LAME! I never understood why they didn't try to find some guy to take Crabbe's place. Surely they're another goofy looking fucker out there who could play him?!

[identity profile] smallbrownfrog.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It gets worse. Two of the answers are wrong. There's the Crabbe/Goyle mess up. I think that they should have either asked "In the movie..." or not have expected that answer.

The yellow question is also a mess. There are several people in the elevator with them, but Umbridge is not one of them. Umbridge is on level one, not in the elevator (though Harry and Hermione are technically in the elevator when they first see her).

It does seem to be film based merchandise given the picture of DanRad there....

The yellow question bugs me more. They ran into so many people in that elevator...

butting in. But is that icon Draco as a Lannister? From A Song Of Ice & Fire? 'Hear me Roar' works so well for him.

... A Malfoy Always pays his debts?

Yes, it is! Draco as a Lannister. :)

[livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat made the art. You can see the original here.

And isn't he the cutest?

Yes, the yellow question is a complete and utter mess.

Oh I would be so upset too! I recall years and years ago that there was an error in one of the history questions in the original set of Trivial Pursuit cards I owned. I think it involved the names of the US presidents on Mt. Rushmore, and (IIRC) they gave *Franklin* Roosevelt as the answer and not Teddy! Horrors!

But this is almost worse, because with the Mt. Rushmore error there is no universe in which the card was correct, so you could easily prove it wrong if called on it. In this case, if you were trying to argue with someone who accepted movie canon, they would just think you were being pedantic, and you're not!

Outrage!

Noooooooooo it's so wrong :(

We are stressed so to help calm down. Let us relax while looking at this beautiful posh pretty man petting a horse and smile....I feel better now. I hope you do LOL! I like capitu found my perfect icon to express my anger.

*shudder* I absolutely share your outrage. Thank you for alerting us to the fact that NO-ONE SHOULD EVER BUY THAT GAME.

(I own the DVDs of all the HP films, but the one for DH2 is still in its wrapper. I've only seen that film once, in the cinema - I was so horrified at what they did to ruin THE MOST IMPORTANT SCENE IN ALL SEVEN BOOKS that I've never been able to bring myself to watch that film again. Maybe one day... but not yet. *shudders again*)

YES, the cock!fire! [livejournal.com profile] dysonrules made it for me because she is glorious and awesome. (I forget the conversation that led to the icon-makeage, but I'm sure it was amazing.)

Yeah, Goyle is important to my head canon too, because Crabbe turns on Draco at the end and Goyle doesn't, and Draco is dragging Goyle's Stupefied body up out of the flames and staying with him when Harry comes to rescue them from the Fiendfyre. It's Draco's moment of heroism-on-behalf-of-his-friend and the movie denies him that. (If he hadn't been trying to save Goyle, he might have found a spare broom just like Harry did, and been able to fly out on his own.) They should have just gotten another actor to play Crabbe, because conflating Crabbe and Goyle wasn't fair to Goyle or Draco.

[identity profile] groolover.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear! Well, I've read the book several times (although it does make me cry)... which is why I have such a clear picture of that scene. Quite apart from the fact that it's featured (or at least mentioned) in so much fanfic. *thwaps them*

Wut. This will not do. :(

[identity profile] fantasyfiend09.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
That IS outrageous! My genuine response was:

WHHHHHAAAAAAATTTTTT?!?!?!?!?!?!

That is SO wrong. At the very least they should put both answers, but to put a fanwork like a film before canon is DIS-GRACE-FUL!! Ugh!!!

Get correction fluid and a pen and fix that shit. Then read the relevant chapter to Mr. Birds. ;)

[identity profile] fantasyfiend09.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Looked up the game on Amazon and saw this:

- 600 questions based on the Harry Potter movies

Guess that's their canon. :/

[identity profile] smallbrownfrog.livejournal.com 2015-10-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that a book/film cock up, too? I don't remember who they meet in the film.

It must be. I reread the scenes just to be sure I wasn't losing my mind. There is no way you could get that answer from the book. Umbridge is never on the elevator with them. The book answer might be something like "several unnamed ministry workers" or "man with bushy mustache."

I am very suspicious of all the answers I've got wrong in this game now! It's not my dodgy memory at all, it's book/film canon conflict ;)

I think you'll have to treat it as a movie trivia game. Or as a paperweight. Or as a doorstop. It might be successful at that. :-)

Two of my colleagues and I had a HP Trivial Pursuit night in the office a while back and we sat in the kitchen area drinking cider and playing this after hours - then we went to the pub. We too raged over the fact that it used exclusively movie!canon and got shit like this wrong. We gave points if we provided book!canon answers anyway and made sure to correct the cards as we went through.

Our next HP games night will involve some sort of weird mash-up of HP and Cluedo (no idea what it's called), which is going to be amazing.
